n January 17 at Clos de Vougeot, the Burgundy wine region ‘Climats’ association launched the line-up of festivities scheduled to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Unesco listing of the ‘Climats’ in the Côtes de Nuits and Beaune wine region, from Dijon to Maranges south of Santenay. The listing, which celebrates the ‘Climats’ as a model of terroir-inspired winegrowing, relates as much to the “cultural aspects as to the heritage that epitomises the ancient history of this wine production”, explains a press statement.
Officially launched on 4 July 2015, the ‘Climats’ will be celebrated throughout 2025, as befits one of France’s 53 heritage listings among the 1,223 recognised worldwide. “From January to December, over 30 events will bring the region’s iconic villages, towns, vineyards and monuments to life”, adds the statement. Highlights include the Climat month festival which will last two months to celebrate this special 10-year event. In December, an international symposium will end the year of festivities with conferences and field visits, in conjunction with the Unesco vines and wines Chair.
“This anniversary is an opportunity to look back over the roots of our commitment. Next July 4, we want to bring together the entire population, across the age groups, both urban and rural residents, winegrowers and everyone else to celebrate and explore this heritage, and what the word ‘Climat’ means here – a region, a variety of vineyard sites but also a culture and a way of life stemming from this heritage”, stressed Gilles de Larouzière, chairman of the Burgundy wine region ‘Climats’ association.
